South Yorkshire Roundup: Steely Performance from the Steel City

Two of Tuesday's goalscorers, Bill Sharp (left) and Callum Paterson (right).

Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday both won by two goals to one on Tuesday night, boosting their survival hopes in their respective divisions.

Firstly, Sheffield United battled back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Bramall Lane against West Bromwich Albion.

The visitors took the lead right at the end of the first half when former Blade Callum Robinson cut inside and stung the palms of Aaron Ramsdale, but his parry fell for Mbaye Diagne who poked the ball towards goal before Ramsdale made another save which then went to Matt Phillips who tucked it away.

Chris Wilder got the right reaction after half time, with Jayden Bogle firing through several West Brom bodies into the corner after Chris Basham was crowded out in the box.

Jayden Bogle has been a great addition to Blades squad this season.

The comeback was completed 17 minutes from time when the visitors failed to clear a cross, the Blades’ fox in the box Billy Sharp pounced, finishing low into the back of the net with a neat first time finish with the outside of is foot.

Albion could have had more than one in the first half with Robinson firing just wide from the edge of the box, a let off for the hosts.

Ramsdale was the hero when the scores were level, making a wonderful block to deny Robinson who looked destined to score inside the six-yard-box following a low cross by Phillips.

The Blades hung on for a priceless three points, putting them one behind the Baggies in the table.

Jordan Rhodes was the match-winner at the Vitality Stadium.

As for the blue side of Sheffield, there was late drama at the Vitality Stadium with the Owls snatching a winning in the dying minutes against AFC Bournemouth to secure a 2-1 victory.

Sheffield Wednesday took the lead just before half time though Callum Paterson after he intercepted a poor back pass before poking the ball under the ‘keeper into the net.

The Cherries equalised from the spot midway through the second half after Sam Hutchinson brought down Sam Surridge in the box, Junior Stanislas stepped up and found the bottom right corner.

However in the 90th minute the Owls won the game, following a flowing move Kadeem Harris whipped the ball into the box which was met by the head of Jordan Rhodes who leapt like a salmon at the back post to head past Asmir Begovic.

Elias Kachunga should have given Wednesday the lead inside the first minute after he took the ball past his marking following a low Matt Penney cross, but the former Terrier was denied by the leg of Begovic.

Wednesday were the better team throughout the first half, and went close through Barry Bannan, whose piledriver from distance was well tipped over by Begovic.

Bournemouth did still have their chances and would have taken the lead if not for a brilliant block by Hutchinson to deny Arnaut Danjuma.

Keiren Westwood was called into action to deny David Brooks following a long ball that caught out the Wednesday defence, but Westwood made the save.

Westwood prevented more late drama after he made a stunning stop from a thunderous effort from Jefferson Lerma, pushing the ball over the bar deep into stoppage time.

The Owls are still 23rd in league but are just three points from safety with a game in hand.

The Rotherham players celebrate together.

Rotherham United hammered Derby County 3-0 on Wednesday night after the fixture was pushed back 24 hours due to a waterlogged pitched.

Michael Ihiekwe gave the Millers the lead with 14 minutes remaining in the match, following a long free kick by Wes Harding that flicked into the path of the defender by Michael Smith, giving Ihiekwe an easy tap in at the back post.

The Millers doubled their lead five minutes later when Smith finished a low Matt Crooks cross at the near post.

With just two minutes left, Rotherham added a third after Ryan Giles’ powerful run cut through the visitors’ defence, before he fired a low shot across the ‘keeper into the bottom corner.

The Millers were the stronger side throughout the game, coming close to a goal in the first half but David Marshall got across well to push away Smith’s long range shot.

Derby’s only meaningful effort in the second half came from Max Bird, but his strike from the edge of the box was easily palmed away by Viktor Johansson.

Lee Gregory should have done better for the Rams but his header on the edge of the six-yard-box was glanced well wide.

The result means the Millers are just two points off safety and have two games in hand on the teams above them.
