Hull City knocked Harrogate Town out of the Papa John’s Trophy at Wetherby Road on Tuesday night.

Harrogate managed to keep out Hull for 75 minutes before James Scott managed to prod home a Martin Samuelson cross.

The Tigers then sealed the victory five minutes from the end after Callum Jones was brought down in the box before he sent Sulphurites stopper, Joe Cracknell, the wrong way.

The result means that despite Harrogate still sitting second in the group, the winner of Hull (third in the group) versus Grimsby (fourth in the group) will go above the Sulphurites in the table.

The Tigers could end up finishing anywhere in the group with a game to go, as a win over Grimsby will see them go top, a draw will see them go second but a defeat will see them finish bottom of the group.

Fabio Silva scores the winner.

Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City also crashed out of the Papa John’s Trophy with Wolves u21s and Oldham Athletic finishing in the top two.

Rovers were powerless to stop the visitors record signing, Fabio Silva, from scoring his first two goals since signing for a reported £35 million.

Silva opened the scoring just 15 minutes in finishing from a tight angle.

Rovers did get back on level terms just eight minutes later after James Coppinger was brought down in the box, before Fejiri Okenabirhie converted the penalty.

However, just as the game looked destined for penalties, Silva popped up to score a late winner via a shot from outside the box.

Bradford City also fell to a late defeat against Oldham Athletic.

The Latics took the lead through David Keillor-Dunn’s early strike, but 15 minutes into the second half, the Bantams equalised through a Will Sutton own goal.

City hung on until the six minutes before Alfie McCalmont struck a clean strike into the bottom corner, before the on-loan Leeds United man added a third in stoppage time.

The result means Bradford sit in third with Doncaster below them in fourth.
