Ridings Roundup (North, East and West Yorkshire): Shock Win for Sulphurites Against Red Devils

Captain Josh Falkingham celebrates with goalscorer Aaron Martin.

Harrogate Town made it a miserable debut for former TOWIE star Mark Wright, winning 1-3 at the People’s Pension Stadium in League Two.

Josh March and Aaron Martin linked up for the opening goal, beginning with an excellent one-two before the latter placed the ball under the ‘keeper.

March doubled the Sulphurites lead on the half hour mark, being taken out in the box by Josh Wright, before stepping up himself to convert from the spot.

Simon Power made it three in first half stoppage time, benefitting from a defection taking his long shot into the far corner.

Crawley did score a consolation goal eight minutes into the second half, after Harrogate failed to clear a short corner, James Belshaw made a superb save from Joe McNerney from point blank range before the rebound fell to half time substitute Tom Dallison-Lisbon who tapped the ball in.

March nearly made it four in the second half but saw his rasping effort palmed away by Glenn Morris.

Will Smith received a straight red card after pulling back Tom Nichols as he raced through on goal but the Sulphurites hung on for a valuable three points that sees them rise to 14th in the table.

Bamford enjoyed his goal against Palace.

On Monday night in the Premier League, Leeds United came away as 2-0 victors against Crystal Palace at Elland Road.

Jack Harrison gave Leeds the perfect start striking into the roof of the net via a slight deflection from just inside the 18 yard box.

Patrick Bamford scored just after half time to put the Whites into a commanding lead, capitalising on Vincente Guaita’s save from Raphinha to pace the ball into the empty net.

Bamford looked lively all evening and should have scored in the first half but ballooned his shot well over after breaking away from the Palace defence.

Pascal Struijk also should have had a goal in the first half, misdirecting two headers that you would have expected him to at least get on target.

In truth, the visitors failed to create anything meaningful, whilst at the other end, Harrison nearly added his second but struck the top of the bar instead.

The result means that Leeds United move into the top half of the table.

Charles Vernam celebrates his goal.

Bradford City were on the wrong side of a five goal thriller at St. James Park on Saturday, losing 3-2 against Exeter City in League Two.

Charles Vernam opened the scoring for the Bantams on 17 minutes, finishing off a superb breakaway after Callum Cooke’s initial effort was saved but fell straight to Vernam.

Pierce Sweeney equalised three minutes before half time, rising highest at the back post from a corner to head past Sam Hornby.

The Bantams battled back and went in front three minutes later through Oliver Crankshaw who capitalised on a short back pass before taking it around the ‘keeper and placing it into the empty net from a tight angle.

Ryan Bowman equalised just beyond the hour mark, getting on the end of a Robbie Willmott cross to head past Hornby.

Bowman was then involved in the Grecian’s winner, taking the ball past Hornby and winning a penalty with just 11 minutes remaining.

Matt Jay stepped up and just squeezed his penalty past the foot of Hornby who very nearly made amends for his earlier error.

The result means that Bradford City sit 19th in League Two.

Harry Toffolo sees red.

In the Championship, Huddersfield Town drew 1-1 to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

The Hatters went in front through James Collins who had the easiest of tap-ins from a Harry Cornick cross 11 minutes in.

The Terriers equalised with 16 minutes left in the match through Naby Sarr, who was there to convert from a few yards out after Simon Sluga could not hold a Juninho Bacuna free kick.

Dan Potts really should have doubled the hosts lead in the first half, hitting the post from two yards out after rising highest to meet a looping cross.

Huddersfield responded in the second half with a better performance, beginning with Pipa flashing a shot just wide of goal.

Duane Holmes will feel he should have won it for the Terriers, but he could only prod a weak effort straight at Sluga after he was stretching to get on the end of a cross.

Harry Toffolo saw red in stoppage time for a nasty lunge on Glen Rea who, from the resulting free kick, headed the ball onto the outside of the post.

The result means that Huddersfield Town sit 17th in the table.

Raya denies Assombalonga.

Middlesbrough were comfortably beaten at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, losing 1-4 to Brentford.

Boro did take the lead three minutes after David Raya completely missed a cross into the box with the ball seemingly hitting either is back foot or Ethan Pinnock which diverted the ball into their own net.

Tariqe Fosu-Henry and Ivan Toney linked up for the visitors seven minutes before half time to equalise, with the latter having the easiest of finishes to score for the Bees.

Vitaly Janelt gave the Bees an undeserved lead 13 minutes into the second half, volleying in a Toney knockdown from the 18 yard line.

But the game was sealed just six minutes later after a fatal Paddy McNair slip gifted the ball to Mathias Jensen who ran through on goal before taking the ball around Marcus Bettinelli and placing it into the empty net.

Toney added his second and Brentford’s fourth with ten minutes remaining, reacting well to a cross into the six yard box by Bryan Mbeumo before heading into the net following a vicious strike from Rico Henry that Bettinelli pushed onto the bar.

After making the mistake for Boro’s goal, Raya showed his worth to his side, making an incredible double save at the end of the first half to firstly keep out Britt Assombalonga at full stretch, before the ball rebounded off the post to George Saville but his weak effort was somehow kept out of the net.

Raya then denied Middlesbrough again at the start of the second half, saving with his knee from point-blank range from Assombalonga before having to prevent another own goal with his right foot following Janelt’s stab at goal.

The result means that Middlesbrough are still seventh in the table, but five points off the play offs.

George Honeyman is tackled at the Pirelli Stadium.

In League One, Hull City fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to strugglers Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Jonny Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 90th minute, working his way into the Tigers penalty area whilst holding off Callum Elder before finishing low into the corner.

The best chance of the first half fell to Keane Lewis-Potter, but his header from a Callum cross was placed narrowly over.

Daniel Crowley also went fairly close, but his speculative effort did not quite curl and dip enough.

Greg Docherty rattled the crossbar from distance in the second half after the Albion defence backed off.

Burton did start showing signs of getting a goal in the second half, with Smith being the obvious dangerman, forcing two decent saves from George Long before eventually beating him at the third attempt.

The result means that drop to second place, three points behind Lincoln City and only ahead of Doncaster Rovers via goals scored.
