Midweek Preview: Blades Look for Back-to-Back Wins

Reece Burke (left), David McGoldrick (centre) and Jack Muldoon (right) will all be in action on Tuesday night.

Sheffield United will be hoping to pick up their first Premier League win of the season after beating Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup on Saturday, when they take on Newcastle United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening.

As mentioned, the Blades beat the Gas, 2-3, at the Memorial Stadium with goals from Oliver Burke and Jayden Bogle (plus an own goal), setting up a tie with Plymouth Argyle in the next round of the competition.

Tuesday’s visitors, Newcastle, crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend, losing 2-0 after extra time to Arsenal, with Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the scoresheet.

Chris Wilder is sweating on the fitness of trio Enda Stevens, George Baldock and Oliver McBurnie, whilst Sander Berge, Jack O'Connell and Jack Robinson will miss out.

After Saturday’s win, Wilder is likely to resist the temptation to make wholesale changes, though may bring Oliver Burke into the XI after his goal off the bench.

Sheffield United have lost their last five league matches against Newcastle, their worst ever losing run against the Magpies.

Bogle has been a shining light lately for the Blades.

They last had a longer league losing run against an opponent between 1990 and 1992 against Leeds United (six in a row).

Sheffield United have lost their last five home league matches, their worst home league losing run since September 1908 (also a run of five).

Since joining the Football League in 1892, the Blades have never lost six consecutive home matches.

Antwoine Hackford became Sheffield United’s youngest appearance maker in the Premier League last time out at Crystal Palace (16y 288d) – if he starts this game, he would be just the fourth 16-year-old to appear in a Premier League starting XI, after Wayne Rooney, Jose Baxter and Reece Oxford.

Harrogate Town's stopper, James Belshaw.

In League Two, Harrogate Town will face top of the table, Carlisle United, on Tuesday night at Wetherby Road.

Last time out, Harrogate lost 2-1 to Cambridge United despite Jack Muldoon putting the Sulphurites into the lead.

Simon Weaver was happy with his side's first half performance at Cambridge on Saturday, when goalscorer Jack Muldoon linked up very well with fellow forward Josh March's on the latter debut after joining from Forest Green, but matters unravelled for the Sulphurites after the interval in a 2-1 defeat, with Lloyd Kerry sent off.

Carlisle beat Walsall 0-2 ten days ago, with Omari Patrick and Joshua Kayode grabbing the goals for the Cumbrians.

Harrogate have lost their last three home league games, more than in their first six home outings this season (W1 D3 L2).

Harrogate have won three of their six midweek league games this season (D1 L2), however all three victories have come on the road.

After a winless league run in Yorkshire between August 2013 and September 2019, Carlisle won on their last visit against Bradford in December.

They have not won two in a row in Yorkshire since August 2007.

Magennis turns in the opener in the last meeting between Hull and Fleetwood.

Finally, Hull City will continue their adventure in the Papa John’s Trophy against Fleetwood Town at the KCOM Stadium on Tuesday.

The Tigers and the Fishermen have already met twice this season, with the home side coming out victorious on both occasions.

Fleetwood hammered Hull 4-1 in the league, with George Honeyman scoring the Tigers only goal of the game.

Hull got their revenge in the FA Cup a month later with Josh Magennis and Reece Burke giving Grant McCann’s men a 2-0 win.

Martin Samuelsen and Callum Jones will be unavailable for the Tigers due to injury.
