Sheffield United picked up their first Premier League win of the season, beating ten-man Newcastle United 1-0, at Bramall Lane.
Substitute, Billy Sharp, scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after VAR gave the Blades a penalty following a Federico Fernandez handball.
It was also a landmark goal for Sharp – his 100th league goal for Sheffield United, which would have been a dream moment for the boyhood Blade.
The Blades were far superior in the first half, with Ryan Fraser compounding Newcastle’s misery by receiving a second yellow card just before half time.
Magpies ‘keeper, Karl Darlow, was regularly tested by the hosts but would have been powerless to stop David McGoldrick’s back post header if he had hit the target.
Jayden Bogle nearly added to his goal tally early in the second half, but Darlow again made a smart stop from point-blank range.
Rhian Brewster nearly got his first goal since arriving from Liverpool, but his long-range effort was deflected onto the post.
Sheffield United are still bottom of the Premier League, however they are now only three points behind 19th place West Bromwich Albion.
It was the late show at the KCOM stadium on Tuesday night, with Hull City coming from two goals down to win 3-2 against Fleetwood Town in the Papa John’s Trophy.
Paddy Madden did put Fleetwood a goal up inside the first eight minutes, turning well before hitting a shot in off the post, before Wes Burns added a second early in the second half via a deflection.
The tide changed when Malik Wilks headed home a George Honeyman corner from the middle of the six-yard-box to give the Tigers a glimmer of hope with 12 minutes left.
The equaliser was nearly a carbon copy of the first just two minutes later, but Alfie Jones’s header cannoned back off the post before Keane Lewis-Potter bundled home the rebound.
Honeyman in-swinging corners had caused the visitors all sorts of problems and played its part in the winning goal.
Fleetwood thought they had dealt with it after Joe Hilton punched away the corner, but the ball fell to Lewie Coyle 35 yards out who took one touch before firing it back where it came from into the top corner.
The goal was good enough to win any game of football and sees Hull City progress to the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy.
Harrogate Town had to postpone their fixture with Carlisle United due to a power cut affecting the stadium and the local area.
