Hull City take on Crewe Alexandra in the first knockout round of the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night at the KCOM Stadium.

The Tigers won 3-0 against Grimsby Town in their last Papa John’s Trophy match, topping their group in the process, with goals from Martin Samuelsen (twice) and James Scott.

Opponents, Crewe, finished second behind Shrewsbury Town in their group, losing 4-3 to them last time out.

The last time these two sides met was in September, where Malik Wilks scored the only goal of the game late on to give the Tigers all three points.

A tough result to take for Boro's Paddy McNair.

In the Championship, Middlesbrough travel to Deepdale on Wednesday night when they face Preston North End.

The Teessiders lost 1-0 last time out to Stoke City with Nathan Collins scoring the only goal of the game.

Hosts, Preston, played out a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, thanks to a goal from Tom Barkhuizen and an own goal from Jason McCarthy.

The Lilywhites have won one of their last 16 league matches against Middlesbrough (D7 L8), winning 2-1 in March 2019.

Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock lost both of his league matches against Preston in 2017/18 as Cardiff manager, having lost just one of his previous 16 such matches against them prior to that.
