Hull City cruised past ten-man Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night at the KCOM Stadium winning 3-0 to go top of League One.
Mallik Wilks scored the opening goal of the game, firing past the goalkeeper at his near post, but it was Keane Lewis-Potter who made the goal with a sublime assist, ripping open the Stanley defence with a lovely piece of skill and pass.
Wilks did not have his most clinical game for the Tigers and should have had a hat-trick before half time, before missing another chance to add his second have a long ball over the top that found him through on goal; his effort was saved but Gavin Whyte made no mistake from the rebound to get his first Tigers goal.
The got a whole worse for the visitors after Cameron Burgess pulled down Jacob Greaves in the box, giving away a penalty and receiving a second yellow card in the process.
Josh Magennis sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the game to bed and seal the Tigers return to the top of the League One table.
In the Championship, Middlesbrough were in control as they brushed aside Nottingham Forest at the City Ground by two goals to one.
Boro started the game well with former Forest star, Britt Assombalonga, giving the Teessiders an early lead after he swept the ball into the back of the net following a low cross from the right by Jonny Howson.
A flowing second half counterattack involving Assombalonga and Marcus Tavernier was brilliantly finished off by George Saville to give Boro a commanding lead.
Loic Mbe Soh did get a very late consolation goal for Forest before Yuri Ribeiro saw red for lashing out at Saville.
It could have been worse for the hosts but Assombalonga’s header from a free kick hit the inside of the post before bouncing off ‘keeper Brice Samba to safety.
The result keeps Boro seventh in the Championship, just three points off the play offs.
In League Two, ten-man Harrogate Town held promotion-chasing Exeter City to a goalless draw at Wetherby Road on Tuesday night.
Harrogate more than matched the visitors in the first half, with Exeter ‘keeper Jon Maxted having to make two good saves from Warren Burrell and Jack Muldoon.
In the second half, Aaron Martin forced an excellent save out of Maxted, turning quickly in the box before striking low to Maxted’s right before a strong right hand clawed the ball away.
The Sulphurites were looking like the favourites to get a winner before Burrell received a second yellow card after two lunges on Jack Sparkes.
Harrogate hung on and now sit 18th in the League Two table.
Finally, Huddersfield Town suffered a disappointing 0-1 defeat at home to Millwall in the Championship on Wednesday night.
Scott Malone scored the only goal of the game early in the match after he was left unmarked at the back post to coolly finish from a Dan McNamara cross.
However, the Terriers were given the opportunity to equalise from the spot just ten minutes later after Lewis O’Brien was brought down in the box by Ben Thompson.
Fraizer Campbell stepped up but powered his penalty straight onto the crossbar, keeping the hosts a goal down.
O’Brien was Huddersfield’s main creative spark and he managed to pick out Juninho Bacuna, but he dragged his shot wide of the post towards the end of the first half.
The Lions did have the ball in the back of the net in the second half after the Terriers failed to properly clear a corner, but it was disallowed for offside as Malone’s initial effort was blocked by his own teammate who was in an offside position.
Huddersfield did have one big late chance to steal a point, but Naby Sarr could not keep his touch at the back post from an in-swinging corner underneath the crossbar.
The result means that Huddersfield Town sit 14th in the Championship.
