Ridings Roundup (North, East and West Yorkshire): Boro Hit Four Past Previous Manager

The Boro players celebrate a big win in Birmingham.

Middlesbrough won 4-1 at St. Andrew’s against Birmingham City and former boss Aitor Karanka on Saturday in the Championship.

The Blues did open the scoring 15 minutes in, after a smart finish from Maxime Colin into the top corner.

However, a quickfire double around the half hour mark saw Boro take the lead, equalising through Britt Assombalonga before George Saville snuck in at the near post to finish past Neil Etheridge.

Lewis Wing scored directly from a corner in the second half, with a big helping hand for Etheridge who let the ball slip through his gloves into the back of the net.

Wing did officially get onto the scoresheet driving the ball through Etheridge from 30 yards to seal the points for the Teessiders, who now sit sixth in the Championship.

The Huddersfield players celebrate an important three points.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Huddersfield Town were victorious at home to Watford, winning 2-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Ben Foster gifted the opening goal after his clearance was closed down by Isaac Mbenza and ricocheted into the path of Fraizer Campbell who passed the ball into the empty net.

Etienne Capoue then sliced his clearance from a Huddersfield corner into his own net to compound Watford manager, Vladimir Ivic’s, fait.

The Terriers managed to hold on to the clean sheet and now move back into the top half of the table.

Pritchard hammers in the winner.

Bradford City were the other winners in West Yorkshire, beating Cambridge United 1-0 at Valley Parade in League Two.

Harry Pritchard scored the only goal of the game and what a goal it was!

He controlled the ball off his chest on the left wing, cutting inside in the process before hitting a perfect strike from just outside of the box in off the post.

The Bantams tried for a second goal and should have had one, but Lee Novak placed his first-time shot wide of the post in the second half.

Callum Cooke then struck the post for Bradford before Richard O’Donnell was called into action at the other end, making a superb save which ended up being enough to win the Bantams an important three points.

Meslier had to pick the ball out of his net six times.

Leeds United lost 6-2 to Manchester United in the Roses Rivalry at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils were ahead after just over a minute when Scott McTominay drove in a superb strike into the bottom corner.

McTominay grabbed a second moments later, bursting through the Leeds defence before placing his effort past Illan Meslier.

It was three for Man Utd on 20 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes smashing the ball into the far corner after a counterattack.

Eight minutes before half time, Manchester United made it four with Anthony Martial flicking a corner to the back post for the onrushing Victor Lindelöf to tap under Meslier from close range.

Liam Cooper got one back for Leeds just before half time, heading the ball in off the post from a corner taken by Raphinha.

Dan James made it five halfway through the first half, passing the ball calmly through the legs of Meslier from a tight angle.

Fernandes got his second minutes later from the spot, after half time substitute Pascal Struijk brought down Martial clumsily in the box.

Stuart Dallas curled in another consolation goal for Leeds in the 73rd minute, placing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box, which ended the scoring.

Patrick Bamford did have the ball in the back of the net on 19 minutes, but offside was given against the forward.

Jack Harrison played in a teasing ball for Raphinha to attack early in the second half, but his volley was brilliantly turned away by David De Gea.

The result means Leeds United stay 14th in the Premier League.

It was a home debut for Edward Francis.

Harrogate Town lost 1-0 at home to Salford City on Saturday at Wetherby Road in League Two.

James Wilson scored the only goal of the game on 17 minutes, capitalising on a long ball forward before firing the ball past James Belshaw.

Salford controlled the game for large portions, with the Sulphurites needing to call upon Belshaw on several occasions to keep the hosts in it.

Harrogate did get a late chance to earn a point, but Jake Lawlor’s glancing header was narrowly off target.

Harrogate go into Christmas 17th in League Two.

Grant McCann had a few words for the officials after the game.

Hull City made it three defeats on the bounce on Friday night in League One, losing 2-0 to Portsmouth despite the visitors failing to register a shot on target.

It was two own-goals that sunk the Tigers, with the first coming early on when Jacob Greaves headed the ball in off the bar from a Pompy corner.

The visitors extended their lead ten minutes after half time, after a knock-down from a Portsmouth free-kick was flicked into his own net by Josh Magennis.

The Tigers did manage to hit the bar at the right end, but Magennis’ header bounced off the woodwork instead of bouncing in.

The result means that Hull drop to third in the table.
