Ridings Roundup (North, East and West Yorkshire): Ruthless Tigers Tear into Pompy

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

George Honeyman, Keane Lewis-Potter and Callum Elder celebrate together.

Hull City battered League One title rivals Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday with the help from two own goals.

The first own goal came midway through the first half when Keane Lewis-Potters header was saved onto the leg of Jack Whatmough before bouncing into the back of the net.

The Tigers doubled their lead just after the hour mark after Lewis-Potter found Mallik Wilks in the box; he delayed his shot but when it did come it was deflected into the path of George Honeyman who tapped it into the net.

Whatmough again scored at the wrong end minutes later, sliding in Honeyman’s low cross into his own net, putting the Tigers well out of sight.

Josh Magennis put the icing on the cake in injury time, firing in a low shot from the edge of the D into the bottom corner.

Hull retain their spot at the top of League One, but only on goal difference.

Manager Simon Weaver was on the pitch following Francis' late equaliser.

Harrogate Town scored a late equaliser through Ed Francis against Salford City on Friday night to earn a valuable point at the Peninsula Stadium in League Two.

Robbie Gotts did give the hosts the lead just over 20 minutes into the game, swivelling with the ball before hitting a strike from the edge of the box past James Belshaw.

Jack Muldoon soon had the Sulphurites back level, getting on the end of a short backpass by Di’Shon Bernard before placing the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Ammies retook the lead with 20 minutes left to play when Belshaw could only parry Richie Towell’s strike onto the leg of Brandon Thomas-Asante who turned the ball into the empty net.

However, there was late drama deep into added time, when there was a scuffle inside the Salford penalty area following a corner, ‘keeper Belshaw who had come up for the corner, scrambled the ball towards the goal before Francis prodded it home to give Harrogate a late equaliser.

Harrogate did have the best chances throughout the match, coming closest to scoring when Brendan Kiernan hit the bar from a volley inside the penalty area.

The result sees Harrogate Town sit 18th in the League Two table.

Sam Hornby earnt his money against Cambridge.

Elsewhere in League Two, Bradford City earned their first point of the year, drawing 0-0 with Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday.

It was an action-packed first half, but neither side could beat the inform goalkeepers with Sam Hornby in the Bantams goal making a number of good saves, with his one-on-one save against Paul Mullin being the pick of the bunch.

New signing Danny Rowe looked particularly lively and was never afraid to test substitute goalkeeper Callum Burton from any distance.

The Bantams came agonisingly close to a winner after 74 minutes as Gareth Evans saw his shot hit the far post and run along the line before bouncing away off the other post.

It was a performance to be proud of from Bradford City but still find themselves 20th in the table.

Nathan Wood strikes the post.

Middlesbrough lost 0-1 at the Riverside Stadium to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday in the Championship.

Joe Rothwell scored the only goal of the game after being given the freedom of the Boro penalty area to slide the ball past Marcus Bettinelli following a Harvey Elliott cross.

Boro should have had a penalty early in the first half, when Dael Fry was caught in the face by the boot of Jarred Branthwaite, but the referee instead gave a goal kick with Fry having to go off injured.

The Teessiders were on top until the goal, going close on a number of occasions in the first half.

Nathan Wood came close for the hosts in the second half, hitting the post from a tight angle after Thomas Kaminski saved Jonny Howson’s header, with Wood reacting fastest to the knockdown, but the defender could only find the outside of the post.

Boro stay in seventh place in the Championship table.
