Ridings Roundup (North, East and West Yorkshire): Sulphurites Come from Behind to Stun Newport

Josh March celebrates his goal against Newport County on Saturday.

Harrogate Town produced a brilliant win at Wetherby Road against promotion-chasing Newport County in League Two, winning 2-1 with the visitors going down to ten men.

The Exiles did go a goal up 17 minutes in when Luke Gambin’s fierce shot deflected past James Belshaw into the bottom corner.

Harrogate equalised just over ten minutes before the break, with Aaron Martin flicking on Belshaw’s long kick, before Josh March hammered in the flick-on superbly into the far corner.

Martin put the Sulphurites in lead midway through the second half, heading in a George Thomson corner.

Joshua McPake nearly got onto the scoresheet in the first half, but his composure inside the Newport box was met by a big right hand from Nick Townsend to keep out the low shot.

Thomson tried his luck from range in the second half, but Townsend was at full stretch to keep out the midfielder.

Liam Shepard received a red card in the 73rd minute for a two-footed lunge on Simon Power.

The drama was not done yet, with Jake Lawlor bailing out his goalkeeper with a heroic goal line clearance with his head to deny Ryan Taylor.

The result means that Harrogate Town stay in 20th place but move nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Cooke slots in the winner for Bradford.

Elsewhere in League Two, Bradford City also won by two goals to one, beating Barrow at Valley Parade on Saturday.

Danny Rowe gave the Bantams an early lead, cutting inside onto his weaker left foot before bending the ball low into the far corner.

Anthony O’Connor gave away a penalty late in the first half after, dragging Scott Quigley to the ground.

Quigley stepped up and equalised from the spot sending Sam Hornby the wrong way.

It took Bradford just four minutes of the second half to get back in front, with Gareth Evans cutting the ball back to Callum Cooke who opened his body up before placing the ball into the far corner.

Cooke could only test the ‘keeper in the first half, striking straight down his throat after he got onto a long searching ball from Finn Cousin-Dawson.

Josh Kay had a big chance to get on the scoresheet for the visitors in the first half, but his shot cannoned off the inside of the post.

Hornby was the late hero, smothering Quigley after the latter had another tousle with O’Connor.

The result sees Bradford City continue their fantastic unbeaten run which now stands at eight games.

Leeds celebrate scoring their third goal at the King Power.

Leeds United came from behind to beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium by three goals to one in the Premier League on Sunday.

Harvey Barnes gave the hosts the lead 13 minutes in after playing a neat one-two with James Maddison before striking low into the far corner.

It took just two minutes for Stuart Dallas to equalise for Leeds, getting on the end of a Patrick Bamford through ball before finishing first time past former Leeds ‘keeper, Kasper Schmeichel.

Raphinha’s one-touch assist fed Bamford through on goal who whipped the ball in to the top corner, giving Schmeichel no chance and Leeds the lead with just 20 minutes left to play.

A devastating Leeds United counterattack sealed the points for the Whites, with Klich sending Bamford through on goal who took his time before squaring the ball across the goal for Jack Harrison to tap into the empty net.

Ayoze Perez and Mateusz Klich both had goals disallowed for offside by VAR before half time as both sides pushed for second goal.

Jonny Evans should have equalised for Leicester in the second half, but he poked the ball wide from a yard out after a corner was turned into his path by Caglar Soyuncu.

Leeds United remain in 12th place but are now just three points off the top half of the table.

Docherty pokes in the only goal of the game.

In League One, Hull City beat Swindon Town by a goal to nil at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday as they continue their title charge.

Greg Docherty scored the only goal of the game, getting on the end of a low George Honeyman cross before finishing high into the roof of the net.

Keane Lewis-Potter came close to doubling Hull’s lead in the first half, getting on the end of a long ball whilst holding off a defender, but could not quite beat Mark Travers in the Swindon goal who pushed the effort aside.

Callum Elder’s corner caused havoc in the Robins area, with Jacob Greaves’ header being blocked by a Swindon defender, and whilst every Hull player appealed for a penalty, Mallik Wilks stabbed the ball back towards goal, only to be saved by the leg of Travers.

Docherty nearly doubled his own tally in the second half, firing a low shot from distance, but Travers got down well to beat away the effort.

The points never looked in doubt and now Hull go back to top of the league.

Bacuna is down injured after a tackle by Norrington-Davies worthy of a red card.

In the Championship, Huddersfield Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home to ten-man Stoke City at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Pipa gave the Terrier’s an early lead with his shot from the edge of the box taking a deflection off John Obi-Mikel before finding the bottom corner.

Sloppy defending gave Stoke a chance to level when Richard Keogh’s misplaced pass found Jack Clarke, who drove towards goal before being clipped in the box by Naby Sarr.

Steven Fletcher continued his great goalscoring run against Huddersfield by sending Ryan Schofield the wrong way.

Rhys Norrington-Davies saw red for a firm tackle on Juninho Bacuna just before half time, but the Terriers could not quite get the winning goal, with Lewis O’Brien going closest in the second half, hammering the bar with a swift strike from inside the 18-yard-box.

Bacuna managed to beat goalkeeper Angus Gunn with a whipped shot from just inside the box, but James McClean got back to help his goalkeeper and head the ball off the line.

Huddersfield Town remain in midtable, nine points clear of the relegation zone and ten points behind the play off places.

Yannick Bolasie made his Boro debut against Norwich.

Also in the Championship, Middlesbrough could not find the breakthrough against ten-man Norwich City with the score ending goalless at Carrow Road.

Mario Vrancic weaved his way through the Boro defence to create the opening chance of the match, but he dragged his shot wide after a brilliant run.

Middlesbrough’s first meaningful chance came in the second half, with Jonny Howson heading straight at Tim Krul from a Paddy McNair in-swinging corner.

Emi Buendia received a second yellow card after he slid in late on George Saville midway through the second half.

Howson, a Norwich player, nearly won the game for Boro, but his bending effort from 25 yards out was too high and did not trouble Krul.

The result sees Boro remain in seventh place, two points off the play off places.
