Huddersfield Town earned their third home win on the bounce after beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Tuesday night in the Championship.

Josh Koroma opened the scoring early in game, sidestepping Owls defender, Dominic Iorfa, before firing low into the corner.

The Terriers doubled their lead through a superb free-kick from Isaac Mbenza, which Joe Wildsmith could not stop despite getting a touch before the ball nestled in the top corner.

Huddersfield had a chance to put the icing on the cake minutes into the second half, but Juninho Bacuna fired the spot kick wide after Iorfa brought down the midfielder.

The visitors never got going, only creating one clear chance which came in the dying minutes for Jordan Rhodes, with the former Terrier firing the ball straight at Ben Hamer.

The result sees the Terriers rise into the top half of the table.

A tough night for Jonny Howson and Paddy McNair.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Middlesbrough suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Brad Potts opened the scoring in the second half, deflecting an Andrew Hughes strike into the corner of the goal.

Scott Sinclair nearly doubled the host lead after he managed to head the ball onto the bar from close range, but did get his name onto the scoresheet, angling in a low left footed strike past Marcus Bettinelli.

Emil Riis Jakobsen put the cherry on top two minutes later cutting inside and hammering the ball under Bettinelli.

The result sees Boro drop to 11th place in the Championship.

Adelakun rolls in the winning penalty.

Hull City made their way through to the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy, beating Crewe Alexandra 3-2 on penalties.

After an even 90 minutes, the game went to penalties with Crewe scoring first with Chris Porter.

Greg Docherty had Hull’s first penalty saved but the Railwaymen missed their second with Oliver Finney striking too high.

The Tigers levelled through Billy Chadwick before George Long saved Regan Griffiths penalty to give the hosts the advantage.

Lewie Coyle put the Tigers into the lead before both sides had a spot kick each saved.

Perry Ng needed score to keep the visitors in it and did so effectively, putting the pressure on Hakeeb Adelakun who needed to score to send the Tigers through.

Adelakun sent the ‘keeper the wrong way placing his shot into the bottom right corner, sending the Tigers into the next round.
