South Yorkshire Preview: FA Cup Action for Blades, Owls, Tykes and Rovers

Four out of the five South Yorkshire sides are in fourth round of the FA Cup.

Sheffield Wednesday will play their first match since their last FA Cup tie when they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday night.

Wednesday beat Exeter City 0-2 in the third round with goals from Adam Reach and Callum Paterson.

Everton beat Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals, Rotherham United, in the third round after extra time, with Cenk Tosun and Abdoulaye Doucoure on the scoresheet for the Toffees.

Sheffield Wednesday have not played since early January, so the current state of the squad is unclear.

The Owls could only name four substitutes in their 2-0 win away to Exeter in the FA Cup third round last time out.

Callum Paterson and Liam Shaw enjoyed combining for Wednesday's second goal against Exeter City.

Adam Reach returned from injury earlier this month but there are still doubts over six players.

This will be the 20th FA Cup match (including replays) between Everton and Sheffield Wednesday, the third most played match in the competition's history.

Everton have progressed from the last five ties, most recently a fourth round meeting in 1989-90.

In all competitions, Sheffield Wednesday have lost just one of their last nine away games against Everton (W5 D3), though this is their first visit since a 1-1 draw in the Premier League in March 2000.

Sheffield Wednesday have been eliminated from 16 of their last 17 FA Cup ties against Premier League opponents, with the exception being a 1-0 win at Brighton last season.

David McGoldrick has been one of the Blades' most inform players this season.

City rivals, Sheffield United, will face League One opposition for the second tie running when host Plymouth Argyle at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

The Blades achieved their first competitive win of the season in the last round, beating Bristol Rovers, 2-3, with goals from Oliver Burke, Jayden Bogle and a Joe Day own goal.

Plymouth have had to win three matches to get to this stage, firstly overcoming Charlton Athletic (0-1) then Lincoln City (2-0) in the second round.

In the third round, Argyle saw off Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium by three goals to two with Ryan Hardie, Panutche Camara and Joe Edwards scoring for the Green Army.

Suspended for their next Premier League match, expect John Egan to start for Sheffield United here.

The Blades remain without Jack O'Connell and Sander Berge, both of whom are long-term absentees.

Chris Wilder may have to do without Ben Osborn, Oli McBurnie and Jack Robinson against Plymouth.

Sheffield United have won five of their last six meetings with Plymouth in all competitions (D1), with this the first game between the sides since a 3-0 win for the Blades in the 2014-15 FA Cup.

Sheffield United have won 15 of their last 16 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, losing the other against non-league Barnet in January 2019.

Darren Moore has been linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday over the past few days.

Doncaster Rovers will travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham United on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Donny beat FC United of Manchester (1-5) and Carlisle United (1-2) in the first and second round and managed to cause an upset in the third round, beating Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park with a goal from Taylor Richards.

West Ham snuck through to the next round of the FA Cup, beating Stockport County 0-1 at Edgeley Park with a late Craig Dawson goal.

Doncaster manager Darren Moore may look to reward the side that knocked Blackburn out of the FA Cup third round with another go here.

The League One outfit have a relatively clean bill of health heading into the weekend.

Rovers have won just one of their last 16 FA Cup games against top-flight opponents (D4 L11), beating QPR 1-0 in the third round in 1984-85.

Donny are looking to reach the FA Cup fifth round for the second time in three seasons, having not previously reached that stage since the 1955-56 campaign.

Doncaster have won their last three away games in the FA Cup, their longest ever winning run on the road in the competition.

Brad Collins should get another run out on Saturday.

Finally, Barnsley will take on fellow Championship side Norwich City at Oakwell in the FA Cup Fourth Road on Saturday.

The Tykes knocked out Tranmere Rovers in the third round with Michel Helik and Cauley Woodrow finding the back of the net in a 2-0 win.

Norwich knocked out Championship opponents, Coventry City, in the last round with early goals from Kenny McLean and Jordan Hugill.

Jordan Williams, Ben Williams and Liam Kitching are ruled out for Barnsley with injuries.

Barnsley have won just one of their last 16 meetings with Norwich in all competitions (D4 L11), losing 0-1 at Carrow Road in the Championship earlier this month.

Barnsley are looking to reach the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 2012-13, with the Tykes losing against Portsmouth at this stage of the competition last season.
