South Yorkshire Roundup: Blades Coast Through to the Next Round of the FA Cup

Chris Basham celebrates with his teammates after scoring the opening goal.

Sheffield United cruised into the next round of the FA Cup, beating Plymouth Argyle 2-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

Chris Basham gave the Blades the lead just before half time after Billy Sharp chipped a cross to the back post for the centre half to attack and power into the back of the net.

Sharp added a second early in the second half after Oli Norwood picked him out with a brilliant through ball; the veteran marksman rounded the goalkeeper and placed his shot into the empty net.

Sloppy defending gifted Plymouth’s consolation goal with Byron Moore teeing up Panutche Camara who slid the ball through the gloves of Aaron Ramsdale.

Camara had a golden chance to give the visitors a shock lead in the first half after he was given the freedom of the United penalty area but placed his shot well over the bar, whilst at the other John Lundstram drilled a shot wide of the post following a knockdown from a John Fleck cross.

VAR denied Sheffield United a penalty after Ethan Ampadu’s shot appeared to hit the arm of Kelland Watts.

Michael Cooper had a brilliant game in goal for Argyle, making a number of good saves, none better than the one he made in the second half to deny a fierce Rhian Brewster strike from 12 yards out, followed up by a late save from close range denying Enda Stevens right at the end of the game.

Sheffield United will face Bristol City in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

All smiles as Barnsley progress.

Barnsley overcame the Championship leaders on Saturday, beating Norwich City 1-0 at Oakwell in the FA Cup.

Callum Styles scored the only goal of the game 11 minutes after half time, turning inside the Norwich City penalty area before sliding the ball into the corner following a Callum Brittian cross.

The Tykes did have the better of the first half and ultimately deserved their goal, finally finding their way past Tim Krul.

It was not until the last 20 minutes until the visitors sustained any major pressure, but Przemyslaw Placheta did manage to place the ball past Brad Collins the Tykes goal, however he saw his effort cannon back off the bar.

Minutes later Placheta had another chance, he went one-on-one with Collins before squaring the ball to Emi Buendia, but Styles managed to get back and block what looked like a certain goal.

Barnsley go through to the fifth round of the FA Cup where they will face either Chelsea or Luton Town at Oakwell.

Rovers gave it their best shot against the Hammers.

Doncaster Rovers were not strong enough to cause another FA Cup upset, losing 4-0 to Premier League West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Donny got off to the worst possible start, conceding inside the first 90 seconds through Pablo Fornals, who got on the end of a low Andriy Yarmolenko cutback.

West Ham came out like a baying for blood but only managed to grab their second after the half hour mark, with Yarmolenko lift the ball over the onrushing Ellery Balcombe.

Balcombe made several good saves at the start of the second half but was unable to stop Andy Butler slicing the ball into his own net from a corner.

Matthew Smith did rattle the woodwork with an excellent half-volley; however, the Hammers added a fourth through debutant Oladapo Afolayan who tapped the ball in after Balcombe could only parry Ryan Fredericks fierce strike.

The result sees Doncaster Rovers crash out of the FA Cup.

It was still a positive night for Wednesday's youngsters.

On Sunday, a young Sheffield Wednesday defence could not stop an experienced Everton side from winning by three goals to nil at Goodison Park in the FA Cup.

The opener came just before the half-hour mark, with Andre Gomes sending a low cross through the six-yard-box to find former Blades striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin sliding in at the back post.

Two goals in three minutes killed off the game, with Richarlison heading in a James Rodriguez corner before Yerry Mina did the exact same moments later.

Wednesday did not just sit back and defend, with Adam Reach hitting a fierce strike from 25 yards that had to pushed away by Robin Olsen early in the first half.

Joe Wildsmith had a superb game in goal for the Owls, saving a Richarlison header in the first half by tipping it onto the bar.

Richarlison was then denied by the linesman’s flag, straying just offside before placing the ball into the net.

Calvert-Lewin attempted to double his tally in the second half but Wildsmith was there again to make a brilliant save to his top left.

Wildsmith then denied Richarlison again with a fingertip save, diving at full stretch to his left and getting a touch to divert the Brazilians curling effort wide.

The result means that Sheffield Wednesday are knocked out of the FA Cup.
