South Yorkshire Roundup: Donny Cause FA Cup Shock in the Battle of the Rovers

Taylor Richards cannot hide his delight.

Doncaster Rovers upset the odds, beating Blackburn Rovers 0-1, at Ewood Park in the FA Cup Third Round.

Taylor Richards scored the only goal of the game just before half time, driving with the ball towards goal before firing a low effort from just outside of the box that went through the grasp of Aynsley Pears into the back of the net.

The first half was an entertaining one, with both sides going close before Richards struck the opening goal.

Tom Anderson nearly headed in a spectacular own goal after his attempted clearance from a Blackburn corner was diverted onto the bar.

New goalkeeper, Ellery Balcombe, on loan from Brentford, then made an excellent double-save to firstly deny Harvey Elliott’s curling strike from outside of the box, and then following with a brilliant reaction save to deny Bradley Dack.

It was a clean sheet for debutant Balcombe and Donny will now face either Stockport County or West Ham United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Bogle celebrates scoring the Blades' winner.

Sheffield United picked up their first win of the 2020/21 season on Saturday, beating Bristol Rovers 2-3 at the Memorial Stadium in the FA Cup.

A strong Blades team opened the scoring on six minutes after Lys Mousset’s header from a Ben Osborn cross cannoned off the bar onto debutant, Joe Day, before crossing the line and going down as an own goal for the Rovers goalkeeper.

Alfie Kilgour equalised for the Gas 15 minutes later, meeting a free kick to send a powerful header past Aaron Ramsdale.

It was three goals in four minutes that altered the game in the Blades favour in the second half, with Oliver Burke converting the first past Day just before the hour mark.

Bristol Rovers did equalise through Max Ehmer three minutes later, with the defender in the right place to tap in a Luke Leahy flick on from a Zain Westbrooke corner.

Jayden Bogle put United back in front from kick off, following a neat move down the right, he rolled the ball under the ‘keeper from a tight angle.

Burke nearly made it four but passed his shot onto the post, but the Blades will now face Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Callum Paterson and Liam Shaw combine for Wednesday's second goal.

Sheffield Wednesday also made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, beating Exeter City 0-2, at St. James Park on Saturday.

The Owls took the lead in the first half with Barry Bannan picking out Adam Reach from a deep free kick, before Reach hammered the bouncing ball past the ‘keeper at the near post.

Callum Paterson sealed safe passage into the next round after youngster Liam Shaw made an audacious diagonal run across the pitch starting in his own half, beating several Exeter players, before making his way into the box and squaring the ball for Paterson who applied the finish.

The Grecians did threaten the Owls, especially in the early stages of the first half, with Matt Jay heading wide from deep cross, before Ryan Bowman had his weak effort from inside the 18-yard-box saved by Joe Wildsmith.

Exeter City’s best chance came at the start of the second half, after a corner went past everyone other than Rory McArdle, the veteran centre-back could not divert the ball over the line from a yard out, instead looping into Wildsmith’s hands.

A congratulations is in order for Ryan Galvin, Isaac Rice and Declan Eratt-Thompson who made their senior debuts for Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday will face Everton in the next round of the FA Cup.

Helik heads the Tykes in front.

On Sunday, Barnsley secured safe passage through to the FA Cup Fourth Round by beating League Two side, Tranmere Rovers, at Oakwell by two goals to nil.

After a fairly dominant first half performance by the Tykes, they finally found the back of the net with Michel Helik heading downward past the Tranmere ‘keeper following a delicate Herbie Kane cross.

In the final minutes, Barnsley were awarded a penalty after Luke Thomas was pulled to the ground.

Cauley Woodrow stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and subsequently putting the Tykes against Norwich City in the next round of the FA Cup.

Tosun lifts the ball over Blackman.

Rotherham United faced extra time heartbreak in the FA Cup on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park.

The hosts did grab an early lead through Cenk Tosun, who lifted the ball over an onrushing Jamal Blackman after a superb through ball by Lewis Gordan that split the Millers defence.

The Millers did equalise in the second half after the ball broke to Matthew Olosunde in the Everton box, who turned and finished low past Robin Olsen who could only watch as it trickled into the back of the net.

Former Real Madrid playmaker, James Rodriguez, showed his quality in extra time, sliding in teammate, Abdoulaye Doucoure, passed the ball into the corner to put Everton into the hat for the next round.

The game was very nearly won in normal time, however VAR intervened to rule out Tosun’s goal from a Rodriguez free kick for offside.

Olosunde caused the Toffees all sorts of problems aside from his goal, producing a good save by Olsen in the first half.

The result sees the Millers crash out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.
