South Yorkshire Roundup: Donny Continue Brilliant Start to 2021

Jon Taylor gives Rovers the three points.

Doncaster Rovers managed to beat Rochdale 1-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday night in League One.

Jon Taylor scored the only goal of the game, placing his close range shot beyond the ‘keeper after being setup via a miss kick from Taylor Richards just past the half-hour mark.

Before that, both sides had come close from distance, but neither Doncaster nor Rochdale could find the target to test the ‘keepers.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the second half, but Donny stood firm and defended resiliently to deny the visitors an equaliser.

The result means that Doncaster Rovers still sit fourth in League One but will rise into second place if they win their game in hand.

Rotherham celebrate taking the lead against Stoke City.

The points were shared at the AESSEAL New York Stadium as Rotherham United and Stoke City played out a six-goal thriller in the Championship.

Rotherham got off to the worst start possible, with Angus McDonald somehow turning a low cross up and over Jamal Blackman into his own net from 12 yards out 15 minutes in.

The Millers did level but not before Wes Harding hammered the ball off the crossbar with a thumping header from a corner, with Matt Crooks and Michael Smith capitalising on a cheap giveaway by the Potters, the latter crossed low for the former to tap the ball into the net.

Michael Smith put the hosts in the lead shortly after half time, heading past Josef Bursik after Stoke failed to clear their lines from a well-worked Millers corner.

Danny Batth made up for his earlier error to equalise for the visitors, the former Sheffield Wednesday defender rose highest from a cross to head the ball past Blackman inside the six-yard-box.

The Millers edged back in front just six minutes later following a game of head-tennis inside the Stoke penalty area, Michael Ihiekwe took the first stab at goal which was blocked but the ball then fell to Crooks fired his effort in off the crossbar.

The scoring was complete with just 15 minutes remaining when Nick Powell guided in a header from a James McClean cross to share the points.

A point means the Millers go above the Owls in the table into 22nd place with a game in hand to spare.

Michel Helik had a tussle with Watford's Joao Pedro.

Barnsley were unable to record a league double of Watford on Tuesday night, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Vicarage Road in the Championship.

Callum Brittian was the victim of a controversial handball with gave Troy Deeney to chance to put Watford into the lead from the spot midway through the first half.

There was no doubt the ball struck the outstretched arm of the Tykes player, but seemingly from a range that would have been impossible for him to get out of the way.

Deeney stepped up and blast the ball through goalkeeper Jack Walton which turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Walton kept the Tykes in the game, diving at the feet of Andre Gray who was baring down on goal to make a superb block.

The closest Barnsley came to scoring was nearly ended up being a spectacular own goal from Hornets defender, Francisco Sierralta, whose flying header from an Alex Mowatt cross forced Daniel Bachmann into a brilliant acrobatic save to keep the hosts in front in the second half.

The result means Barnsley drop to tenth with a number of teams having a game in hand on the Tykes.
