South Yorkshire Roundup: Millers Claim Vital Three Points

Jamie Lindsay celebrates scoring the winner at Pride Park.

Rotherham United picked up a valuable three points at Pride Park on Saturday, as they beat Derby County 0-1 in the Championship.

The only goal of the game was scored in the dying minutes of the match by Jamie Lindsay, who reacted well following Daniel Barlaser hitting the post from a free-kick and Michael Ihiekwe turning the ball back into the area for Lindsay to tap in.

The hosts did have the best chance of the first half but found Millers stopper Jamal Blackman in top form, who made a great save to deny Graeme Shinnie.

Lindsay had Rotherham’s best chance after he got on the end of a Ihiekwe knockdown deep inside the Rams penalty area, but his shot was blocked on the line by Andre Wisdom.

The result sees Rotherham jump above Derby in the table on goal difference, but the Millers do have two games in hand.

An enjoyable weekend for Rovers and Okenabirhie.

In League One, Doncaster Rovers continued their promotion push by winning 1-2 away to Swindon Town on Saturday.

Once again it was the Fejiri Okenabirhie show who grabbed a first half brace for Donny to put them out of sight.

The first came from a perfectly timed run, assisted by Reece James, before racing away from the defenders and finishing coolly under the ‘keeper.

Rovers doubled their lead in stoppage time in the first half, with Okenabirhie reacting first to an Andy Butler knockdown inside the six-yard-box, scoring with the simplest of finishes.

Hallam Hope gave Swindon exactly that in the second half, flicking Scott Twine’s shot past Ellery Balcombe, who very nearly kept out the strike.

New signing Elliot Simoes tried his hardest to make his first meaningful act as a Rovers player, but his mazey run in the first half did not have the required end product, shooting straight at Mark Travers.

Rovers saw the game out and are now just three points behind Hull City in the automatic promotion places.

Ethan Ampadu cannot hide his frustration.

Sheffield United were unable to hold off Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, losing 1-3 at Bramall Lane.

The Blades got off to a terrible start with Serge Aurier heading in at the near post from a Son Heung-Min corner five minutes in.

Harry Kane doubled Spurs’ advantage just before halftime, driving at the Sheffield United defence before firing a low shot past ‘keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Blades did grab a goal back through David McGoldrick, who headed in a superb John Fleck cross to give United a glimpse of hope.

However, just minutes later their hopes were shattered by an unbelievable lob from Tanguy Ndombele, who hooked the ball over Ramsdale with the outside of his right foot from a seemingly impossible angle.

Spurs could have added to their lead moments after scoring the first, but Son saw his chip strike the outside of the post and go wide.

In the end the Blades were no match for Spurs and still sit bottom of the Premier League.

Lowe tucks away Swansea's second goal.

Barnsley were beaten by two goals to nil by Swansea City at Oakwell on Saturday night in the Championship.

Swansea took the lead in first half stoppage time when Connor Roberts’ long throw was flicked all the way in by defender Ben Cabango.

Jamal Lowe then punished the two Barnsley centre backs for getting in each other’s way ten minutes into the second half, stealing the lose ball off them before placing his shot past Jack Walton.

Victor Adeboyejo caused the Swans all sorts of problems in the first half but could not quite find the perfect finish to beat Freddie Woodman.

Callum Brittian nearly scored one of the goals of the season in the second half, striking venomously from 35 yards, but Woodman just got across to tip the ball over the bar.

The Tykes still remain inside the top half of the table and sit in tenth place.
