South Yorkshire Roundup: Tykes Turnover Owls in Local Derby

Barnsley came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday.

The Owls took the lead with just four minutes on the clock after a long ball by Barry Bannan found Josh Windass who managed to beat Jack Walton, before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Barnsley response was excellent and equalised from a corner ten minutes later, with Cauley Woodrow getting the decisive touch to head the ball over the line.

A superb Reds move opened up the Wednesday defence eight minutes before half time, before Dominik Frieser poked the ball under Joe Wildsmith to give the Tykes the lead.

Another tough afternoon for the Owls.

Wednesday responded in the second half with a fierce drive at goal by Kadeem Harris whose strike was well saved by Walton, before Windass had an attempt at goal from the edge of the box, which Walton also dealt with.

Callum Styles managed to find an opening for the visitors but somehow drilled the ball over from six yards out.

The hosts luck just was not in when Joey Pelupessy hit a fantastic strike from 35 yards which Walton tipped onto the bar before the ball bounce of the back of the ‘keeper and striking the woodwork again.

The result means Barnsley rise to 13th whilst Sheffield Wednesday remain bottom of the Championship.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Rotherham United produced a fantastic result against Bristol City at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, winning 2-0 on Saturday.

Matt Crooks gave the Millers the lead just four minutes into the match, heading the ball into the roof of the net from a Daniel Barlaser free-kick.

The Millers dominated the first half and were rewarded for their efforts four minutes before half time, when Michael Smith turned in a whipped cross from Matthew Olosunde under ‘keeper Daniel Bentley.

In the second half, the Robins came back stronger and Viktor Johansson had to make an important save with his feet to deny half time sub Famara Diedhiou.

In the end Rotherham hung on for an important win which sees them move three points clear of the relegation zone.

In League One, Doncaster Rovers beat Gillingham 2-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Reece James opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark with an excellent finish with the outside of his foot into the bottom corner.

Kyle Dempsey did equalise for the Gills just after half time, striking a low shot from the edge of the box which snuck into the bottom corner.

But Rovers restored their lead just two minutes later after a counterattack from the hosts picked out skipper, Ben Whiteman, who had his shot saved before Brad Halliday followed up and fired in the winner.

In the end their only looked like one winner, with Josh Sims have an effort well-saved before Fejiri Okenabirhie hit the inside of the post.

The result means that Doncaster move up to seventh in the league.


Aaron Ramsdale looked dejected after the final whistle.

In the Premier League, Sheffield United were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Southampton on Sunday.

The Blades slow start was punished by former striker, Che Adams, who capitalised on Sheffield United’s failed attempt of clearing of a free kick ten minutes before half time.

Sheffield United’s luck went from bad to worse when Stuart Armstrong’s shot from the edge of the box deflected in off Phil Jagielka just after the hour mark.

The Saints sealed the game seven minutes after Nathan Redmond finished brilliantly inside the United box after a good one-two with Oriol Romeu.

The result keeps the Blades at the bottom of the Premier League on one point.
