Middlesbrough are meeting expectation this season as they sat comfortably in the play offs going into this fixture.
Whereas Sheffield Wednesday are massively under-performing with the Owls sitting in the bottom half of the table.
This Yorkshire clash was important for both teams, Middlesbrough had won the game at Hillsborough as few months ago 2-1, so it was always going to be a tight affair.

After nearly 20 minutes of Boro dominance, Wednesday have started to grow into the game, with a good move between Adam Reach and Marco Matias ending due to an offside flag.

Sheffield Wednesday have the lead and its a familiar face for Boro fans, Adam Reach has broken the deadlock at the Riverside stadium. Wednesday kept the ball in midfield brilliantly before Barry Bannan played an exquisite pass over the top of the Boro defence to the former Middlesbrough midfielder, who calmly poked the ball through Randolph's legs! Randolph is forced into making a save after the resulting free kick is taken short to Matias, who's cross is met by the head of Lees, but Randolph manages to pluck it out of the air.

The majority of the stadium appeals for a free kick for Boro after a potential handball is not given against Wednesday defender Michael Hector.

It's not going Boro's way today as Brit Assombalonga is slipped in one on one, but Hector gets back to cover for Wednesday, they both go to ground, but the referee gives the foul to the Owls.

Boos ring round the Riverside, and seconds later Ayala swipes his arm across Owls forward Steven Fletcher and receives a booking.

Sam Hutchinson flies into a tackle which he times perfectly to break up the Middlesbrough attack, the ball falls to Onomah who finds Fletcher with his pass but he is fouled on the halfway line.

Boro counter at pace down their left side, they switch the ball across the pitch to McNair who is free. He ends up one on one with Fox, but the Owls left back stands strong to block the cross and prevent what would've been a clear goal scoring opportunity.

From that block, Wednesday start a counter of their own, Bannan races away and starts a neat move on the edge of Boro's area. He manages to flick a pass through to Fletcher, but his touch is too heavy, and that gives Randolph to dive onto the ball on his 6 yard line.

Reach's looping cross is won, just, by Fletcher but because he was under pressure, the header isn't great, and it loops high, easy for Randolph to claim.

The Owls fall victim to another injury as first half sub Josh Onomah has to come off, he is replaced by George Boyd.

After Palmer fouled his man on the edge of his own area, Boro had the perfect chance to equalise. Wednesday brought everyone back for this, but they didn't need to as Assombalonga's free kick slammed straight into his striker partner Jordan Hugill.
