Yorkshire Derby Roundup: Millers Fire Three Past Boro

Sam Morsy gets some stick from the Rotherham players after Michael Smith tucked away his penalty.

Rotherham United got the better of former manager Neil Warnock by battering his Middlesbrough side by three goals to nil at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night.

A debut goal for Ryan Giles.

Matt Crooks gave the Millers a lead just before half time, showing excellent technique to volley the ball past Marcus Bettinelli from the edge of the box.

The Millers were awarded a penalty with eleven minutes remaining in the second half wish Michael Smith despatched confidently after Bettinelli lunged in with his feet at Michael Ihiekwe in the six-yard-box.

Late substitute Ryan Giles sealed the game in stoppage time with a debut goal after he was slid in on goal and shot through the ‘keepers’ legs via a slight deflecting off the Middlesbrough defender.

Smith was nearly the man to open the scoring in the first half but dragged his shot just wide of Bettinelli’s goal.

Crooks was next to miss a big chance for the visitors, pinching the ball off Jonny Howson but placing his shot just past the post.

Another poor result at the Riverside Stadium for Boro.

Boro did liven up in the second half, but Patrick Roberts sliced an effort over as he search for what would have been an equaliser.

The Millers just seemed to show more fight and desire than Boro, and that showed when Jamal Blackman made a superb block to deny Sam Morsy from close range.

Middlesbrough still remain in seventh place, but most teams do have a game in hand on them.

Whilst Rotherham United still remain in the Championship relegation zone, they do have games in hand on the teams around them.
